DID YOU KNOW...?
Apple Facts
Apple availability at Pennings Orchard is due to two
things:
the
weather and the amount of people who come to pick.
- Apple trees will bear fruit
in their 4th or 5th year of growing.
- Out of the 40 apple-growing
states, NY, Wash., Michigan, Penn.,
Virginia, California and North Carolina are responsible for producing
60% of the country's annual
crop.
- Apples are a member of the
rose family.
- Apples are high in
fiber.
- Americans eat an average of
18 pounds of fresh apples each year.
- Fresh apples float because
25% of their volume is air.
- About 50% of apples grown
in the United States are sold fresh, and 50% are processed into apple
juice, apple sauce or dehydrated apple products.
- Apples have been around for
about 750,000 years!
- The first commercial
orchard was planted in 1730 in Flushing, Long Island.
- Johnny
Appleseed was a real person! His name was John Chapman,
born in 1744 in Massachusetts. He left home at an early age with
the intention of teaching the bible and planting apple nurseries from
seeds on the New Frontier. When he died in 1854, he was doing his
customary rounds of his many trees.
- An apple a day really does keep the doctor away. In a study
at Michigan State University, researchers found that those subjects who
ate 2 or more apples a day had less headaches and respiratory illnesses
and had better health in general than those subjects who ate none.
In addition, a study done at Rutgers University showed that apple
pectins trap and prevent cholesterol from building up in the linings of
blood vessels. This results in lowered blood pressure and reduced
arteriosclerosis symptoms.
- Apples ripen 10 times
faster in a dry, warm atmosphere than they do in cold storage. The
International Apple Institute recommends consumers keep their apples
under refrigeration in the hydrator drawer, at temps anywhere from 32-40
degree F.
