Apple Varieties and Availability

Please Note: Picking dates are estimated and can vary. Please feel free to call us at 845-986-7080 for our “ready to pick list” and ask if you are looking for a certain variety on a particular day. All apples listed, including those not currently available for picking in our Orchard this season, have been previously picked, cooled, and are available for your convience in the Pennings Farm Market

Ginger Golds:  Ginger Golds are big, bright yellow, crispy and sweet. They are good for salads and sauce, or just excellent to eat!  Available early September.
McIntosh:  Available for picking August 31st – September 30th depending on weather and picking conditions.  McIntosh are generally green on one side, and red on the other; usually large and somewhat tart.  Good for salads, sauce, pies or eating.
Gala:  Available for purchasing from September 3rd – October 14th depending on weather and picking conditions.  Galas are grown especially for kids! They tend to be mild flavored, juicy and crispy.  They are usually a bright yellow and red in color. Great for salads and eating.
Empires: Available for picking September 12th – end of October depending on weather and picking conditions.  Empires tend to be medium sized, red in color, sweet, good for snacking, sauce and salads.
HoneyCrisp:  Available in early September, Honeycrisp apples were produced from a cross breeding program in the 1960’s involving the Macoun and Honeygold apples, as part of the University of Minnesota apple breeding program to develop winter hardy cultivars with high fruit quality. Honeycrisp’s tend to be clean, crisp, and have a sweet tart taste. Great for eating!
Cortlands:  Available for picking September 19th – end of October depending on weather and picking conditions. Cortlands are generally large, semi-sweet, mostly red in color.They are excellent for apple pies! They also good for eating, sauce and salads.
Jonagolds:  Available for picking usually mid to end of September to October 17th depending on weather and picking conditions.  Jonagolds are almost always yellow and red in color, usually large; sweet, good for snacking, salads and sauce.
Jonamacs:   Available for purchasing in the Farm Market Only from September 3rd – September 24th depending on weather and picking conditions. Jonamacs are usually medium sized, red, good for pies, sauce and eating.  
Macouns:  Available for picking September 12th – October 9th depending on weather and picking conditions. Macouns tend to be medium sized, red in color, semi-sweet, crunchy, excellent for eating, sauce and salads.
Red Delicious:  Available for picking toward the end of September to the end of October or beginning of November depending on weather and picking conditions. Red Delicious are a very popular large, sweet apple that is good for snacking, sauce and salads.
Golden Delicious: Available for picking toward the end of September to the end of October depending on weather and picking conditions. Golden Delicious are yellow in color, sweet, good for eating, sauce and salads.
Stayman Winesaps:  Available for picking September 30th – October 19th depending on weather and picking conditions.  Stayman Winesaps are medium sized, red in color, with a distinct wine flavor, excellent for eating, sauce and salads.
Ida Reds:  Available for picking September 30th – end of October or mid November depending on weather and picking conditions.   Idareds are a sweet/tart and juicy apple, they have a firm, pale yellow-green flesh and are terrific for cooking, eating, salads, baking and pies. Idareds also make a beautiful pinkish applesauce!
Mutsu (Crispins):  Available for picking September 30th – October 28th depending on weather and picking conditions. Crispins are usuallarge, yellow colored, sweet, and excellent for eating, sauce and salads.
Fujis:  Available for picking October 18th – November 9th depending on weather and picking conditions.  Fujis are small,sweet, hard, crisp, red in color.Good for eating, salads and sauce.
Granny Smiths: Available for picking towards the end of October to mid November depending on weather and picking conditions.  Granny Smiths tend to be large, green in color, hard, tart, tangy and crispy. Excellent for eating, pies, sauce and salads.
Braeburn:   Available for picking from the beginning of October to mid November depending on weather and picking conditions. These apples, which are very popular in California, are essentially a green fruit with generous red coloring.Braeburn’s tend to have a better flavor, texture and staying quality than those left on the tree to redden longer. They also have a tart, almost spicy flavor, and are excellent for cooking, salads, baking, sauce, pies and can withstand freezing.
